ADC calls for independent engineering assessment of Lameco Flyover

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Governorship Campaign Council in Osun State has called for an independent engineering assessment of the newly commissioned Lameco Flyover in Osogbo following reports of structural defects on the facility.

 

In a statement issued on Monday by its spokesperson, Hon. Nurein Adebisi, the council expressed concern over the reported failures observed on the flyover, saying the development underscored the need to prioritise professional standards over politics in the delivery of public infrastructure.

 

According to the ADC, critical infrastructure such as flyovers should be subjected to rigorous engineering standards because they carry thousands of commuters daily.

 

“What we are witnessing is a clear sign that politics and optics have overtaken professionalism in the delivery of a critical public infrastructure,” the statement said.

 

The opposition party urged that the issue be depoliticised and subjected to an independent technical review in the interest of public safety.

 

The council recommended a comprehensive assessment of the flyover, including structural integrity tests to determine its load-bearing capacity, deflection and vibration levels, as well as material quality tests to verify the strength of concrete, steel reinforcement and asphalt used in the project.

 

It also called for an audit of the drainage system and expansion joints to identify possible design flaws that could lead to water accumulation and premature deterioration.

 

In addition, the ADC sought a comparison of the completed project with the approved engineering drawings and Bill of Quantities (BoQ) to ascertain compliance with project specifications.

 

The council appealed to the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NISTructE) and other relevant professional bodies to constitute an independent panel to assess the flyover and make its findings public.

 

It also urged the Osun State Government to grant the panel unrestricted access to project documents, the construction site and contractors to facilitate a transparent investigation.

 

The ADC maintained that residents of Osun State deserve infrastructure that is safe, durable and built to approved standards, adding that it would support efforts aimed at ensuring public safety and accountability.
