Ex-NAF spokesman says Nigerian military personnel are underpaid

A former spokesperson of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), Group Captain Sadeeq Shehu (retd.), has said Nigerian military personnel are underpaid, arguing that a monthly salary of ₦100,000 is inadequate considering the risks associated with military service.

 

Shehu made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he called for improved welfare packages and better working conditions for members of the Armed Forces.

 

According to him, military remuneration in many countries is reviewed regularly to reflect inflation and the rising cost of living, stressing that Nigeria should adopt a similar approach.

 

“Nigerian soldiers are underpaid. ₦100,000 is not enough. When you talk about motivation for military personnel, the first thing that comes to people’s mind is salary and allowances. But that is only one aspect,” he said.

 

While acknowledging that fair pay is important, Shehu said motivation goes beyond salaries and includes adequate welfare, proper equipment and improved operational support.

 

“Yes, a soldier needs to be paid the appropriate amount based on the risk that he’s taking for his life. But it’s not only about money. Our soldiers are doing great work,” he added.

 

The retired Air Force officer also criticised the prolonged deployment of troops to combat zones, noting that soldiers in advanced militaries are typically rotated after 10 to 12 months.

 

“I have met a soldier who served for four years unbroken. It is not done. So when you have more soldiers, that also adds motivation because I know I will go and fight… for 12 months, then I will come back and be with my family,” he said.

 

Shehu further stressed the need for reliable medical evacuation, quality healthcare and the provision of essential combat equipment.

 

According to him, soldiers should not be required to purchase uniforms, protective gear or other operational equipment with their personal funds.

 

“There is motivation to know that I don’t have to use my salary to buy any piece of equipment or uniform that I’m going to use for the work,” he said.
