Trump jokes about seeking fourth White House term

United States President Donald Trump has joked about seeking a fourth term in office despite constitutional limits barring any president from being elected more than twice.

Trump made the remarks on Friday during the rescheduled White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner held at the Waldorf Astoria in Washington, D.C., where he appeared wearing a red “Trump 2028” cap.

Addressing guests, the president described the announcement as a “scoop.”

“I’m pleased to announce my intention to, and this is somewhat of a scoop, my intention to run for a fourth term as President of the United States. I will be doing that. It should be easy. I’m getting very good at running for president,” Trump said.

He also revisited his long-standing claims about the 2020 presidential election, which he lost to former President Joe Biden.

“I won three times. Did very well the second time, by the way. It’s a rigged election, but we’ll have to talk about it,” he said.

Under the 22nd Amendment to the US Constitution, no person may be elected president more than twice, making a fourth presidential term constitutionally impossible.

The dinner marked Trump’s first appearance at the annual event as president after boycotting it throughout his first term and the early part of his second.

The event, originally scheduled for April, was postponed after gunfire disrupted the gathering and prompted the evacuation of guests, including Trump and First Lady Melania Trump. Authorities later arrested a suspect.

The rescheduled dinner was held under heightened security at the Waldorf Astoria, replacing the Washington Hilton, which had hosted the event for nearly six decades.
