In his message marking Nelson Mandela International Day, Guterres described the late South African anti-apartheid icon as “a towering figure of peace, reconciliation, justice and human rights,” noting that he was also a steadfast advocate for poverty eradication and equality.
Observed annually on July 18, Mandela’s birthday, the day encourages people to dedicate 67 minutes to community service, symbolising the 67 years he devoted to the struggle for justice. The 2026 theme is “It’s still in our hands to combat poverty and inequity.”
Highlighting the theme, Guterres said ending poverty is “not an act of charity” but “an act of justice” and a responsibility shared by all.
He warned that global inequality continues to widen, with wealth increasingly concentrated among a few while millions struggle to meet basic needs such as food, water, shelter and education.
According to him, years of progress in reducing poverty have been undermined by conflicts, economic shocks and climate-related disasters.
The UN chief called for greater investment in decent jobs, universal healthcare, quality education and social protection, while urging increased financing for developing countries, reforms to the global financial system and debt relief to support sustainable development.
He also advocated for a transition to renewable energy-driven economies, saying it would benefit both people and the environment.
Reflecting on Mandela’s legacy, Guterres said the late statesman believed that “when people stand together, nothing is impossible,” urging the global community to continue pursuing a more just, peaceful and equal world.
