INEC launches self-service online voter registration platform, extends CVR exercise

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has introduced a self-service online voter registration platform for eligible first-time voters as part of efforts to improve accessibility and increase participation in the electoral process.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Nasarawa State, Mohammed Abubakar-Sadiq, announced the initiative during a news briefing on Tuesday in Lafia.

According to him, the platform will become operational on Wednesday, July 8, through INEC’s Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) portal, where eligible Nigerians can access registration guidelines and complete the process using their personal devices.

Abubakar-Sadiq said the platform allows first-time voters to initiate and complete their registration, including biometric capture, without visiting an INEC office.

He explained that the system is equipped with identity verification, biometric validation and backend integrity checks to ensure the credibility and accuracy of the National Register of Voters.

He said the initiative aligns with the Commission’s commitment to innovation, accessibility and improved service delivery.

The REC, however, noted that voters seeking to complete an ongoing physical registration, transfer their voting location or replace lost or damaged Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) must still visit designated INEC registration centres.

Abubakar-Sadiq also announced that the Commission had approved a two-week extension of the ongoing nationwide Continuous Voter Registration exercise.

He said the final phase of the exercise, initially scheduled to end on July 10, will now conclude on July 26, following feedback from INEC state offices, political parties, civil society organisations and other stakeholders.

“The extension is to provide additional opportunity for eligible Nigerians who are yet to register as voters to do so ahead of future electoral activities.

“It underscores the Commission’s commitment to ensuring that every eligible Nigerian has a fair and reasonable opportunity to be included in the National Register of Voters,” he said.

Abubakar-Sadiq recalled that the nationwide CVR exercise began on August 18, 2025, and recorded significant participation across Nasarawa State, including registrations by Persons Living with Disabilities (PLWDs).

He urged eligible residents who are yet to register to take advantage of the extension and the newly introduced online platform.

The REC reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to delivering a credible, inclusive and transparent voter registration process through the deployment of technology, while appreciating the media, political parties, civil society organisations, security agencies and other stakeholders for their support in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
