Tinubu forwards state police constitutional amendment bill to Senate

President Bola Tinubu has transmitted a Constitution Alteration Bill to the National Assembly, seeking to establish state police across Nigeria.

The proposed legislation aims to amend relevant provisions of the 1999 Constitution to provide the legal framework for the creation and operation of state police.

The move follows repeated calls by the President for constitutional reforms to strengthen security by allowing states to play a greater role in policing their territories.

In February, Tinubu urged the National Assembly to amend the Constitution to accommodate state police, describing the reform as essential to tackling terrorism, banditry and other security challenges.

On Democracy Day, the President also vowed that terrorists, bandits and their sponsors would face the full weight of the law, stating that more than 13,000 terrorists had been neutralised over the past year while terrorism-related deaths had declined significantly.

The proposal comes amid growing support for the decentralisation of policing, with both chambers of the National Assembly already considering constitutional amendments aimed at establishing state police nationwide.
