World Cup 2026: Hakimi becomes Africa’s most-capped player in tournament history

Morocco captain Achraf Hakimi has become the most-capped African player in FIFA World Cup history after making his 12th tournament appearance.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender reached the milestone during Morocco’s World Cup match against Scotland.

Hakimi entered the 2026 FIFA World Cup with 10 tournament appearances. He made his 11th appearance in Morocco’s 1-1 draw against Brazil before setting the new record with his 12th appearance against Scotland.

The 27-year-old now tops the list of African players with the most FIFA World Cup appearances, surpassing Cameroon’s François Omam-Biyik and Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan, who each made 11 appearances.

Hakimi has represented Morocco at three FIFA World Cups and has featured in every World Cup match played by the Atlas Lions during that period.
