NDC Explains Why Obi, Kwankwaso Are Exempt from Anti-Defection Oath

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has said its presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, will not be required to sign the party’s newly introduced anti-defection oath.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the party’s National Spokesman, Ikenna Enekweizu, said the exemption was an administrative decision by the party leadership.

He maintained that the anti-defection policy is consistent with the party’s constitution and does not violate the Nigerian Constitution, stressing that political parties are voluntary associations governed by their internal rules.

According to Enekweizu, the policy is primarily aimed at preventing elected members of the National and State Assemblies from defecting to other political parties after winning elections on the NDC platform.

He said the party’s focus is on strengthening internal discipline and building a stable political institution rather than restricting the executive arm.

The NDC recently introduced the mandatory affidavit and indemnity policy for governorship and legislative candidates as part of efforts to curb post-election defections and promote party loyalty ahead of the 2027 general elections.
