Governors Back State Police, Push for Constitutional Amendment

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has endorsed the establishment of state police, saying the proposed security structure should be backed by clear constitutional provisions and safeguards for citizens’ rights.

The governors reached the decision after their meeting in Abuja, where discussions centred on security, electricity reform and nutrition.

In a communiqué signed by NGF Chairman and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the forum said members reviewed progress made toward creating a workable state policing system.

The governors also received presentations from the NGF Secretariat and state Attorneys-General on ongoing efforts to establish state police, including proposed constitutional amendments and operational frameworks.

Speaking after the meeting, Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun said the governors agreed that state policing is an important step toward addressing Nigeria’s security challenges but stressed that the framework must be carefully designed.

The forum said consultations with state Attorneys-General would continue as part of efforts to develop a constitutional and operational framework for the proposed state police system.
