Bandits demand N1bn, 35 motorcycles for release of 37 abducted Kaduna worshippers

Residents of Ariko community in Kachia Local Government Area of Kaduna State have appealed to the Federal and Kaduna State governments to urgently intervene in securing the release of 37 worshippers abducted during Easter Sunday attacks on churches in the area.

Community leaders said the abductors are demanding N1 billion and 35 motorcycles as ransom for the victims, who have remained in captivity for about 45 days.

President of the Kuturmi Development Association (KUDA), Dr Joseph David Ariko, said the community lacks the financial capacity to meet the demands.

Armed bandits had reportedly attacked three churches in Ariko community during Easter Sunday services, killing five worshippers and abducting 37 others.

The victims were taken from St. Augustine Catholic Church, ECWA Church and Baptist Church.

Speaking on the development, Ariko said the kidnappers have remained in contact with the community and continued to insist on their demands.

“They call virtually every two days, demanding N1 billion and 35 motorcycles. They are not ready to reduce the amount of money they are demanding from poor farmers, who in reality cannot afford to raise such an amount,” he said.

He noted that residents had exhausted available options and were now relying on government intervention to secure the victims’ release.

“We want the government to rescue our people because we cannot afford what the bandits are demanding from us,” he said.

Ariko said the prolonged captivity had heightened fear in the community and disrupted social and economic activities.

He added that many families were battling emotional and financial hardship since the attack.

Community leaders called on security agencies to intensify rescue efforts and restore confidence among residents.

They also appealed to humanitarian organisations and well-meaning Nigerians to support efforts toward securing the victims’ release.
