According to sources familiar with the development, the Oyo State governor has instead advised his loyalists to align with the Allied Peoples Movement, APM, amid growing uncertainty surrounding the future of the PDP and ongoing legal disputes affecting the African Democratic Congress, ADC.
A source privy to the discussions disclosed that Makinde allegedly reached the decision after consultations with Bala Mohammed, with both leaders reportedly concluding that remaining in the PDP or moving into the crisis-ridden ADC may not be politically strategic ahead of the next election cycle.
The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the APM was considered a safer political platform because it is currently free from internal litigations and legal encumbrances.
“I can confirm that the governor has given the directive to his political supporters and loyalists. The idea is to avoid being trapped in the PDP or entangled in the ADC crisis. To be on the safe side, he has privately advised many of us to identify with the APM. Except there is a last-minute change, the decision may soon be made public,” the source said.
The source further stated that Makinde is not interested in contesting the presidency or serving as running mate to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in 2027, despite speculations in some political circles.
According to the insider, the governor remains focused on governance and political consolidation in Oyo State.
“I doubt Governor Makinde will contest for president or accept a vice-presidential slot as being speculated. From what I know, he is concentrating on Oyo State and strengthening his political structure,” the source added.
