Katsina unveils policy to protect schools from insecurity, violence

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda has unveiled the Katsina State Safety, Security and Violence-Free Schools Policy, aimed at protecting students, teachers and learning environments across the state.

Speaking during the launch, Radda described the initiative as a major step towards strengthening the safety of schools and securing the future of children in Katsina.

The governor stressed that education remains vital to development and peace, noting that effective learning can only take place in safe environments.

“This is not just the unveiling of a policy document, but a clear declaration of our commitment to ensuring that every school in Katsina becomes a safe haven for learning,” he said.

Radda expressed concern over threats facing schools, including insecurity, bullying, gang activities, gender-based violence, substance abuse and environmental hazards.

According to him, some schools in the state have experienced incidents that disrupted academic activities and endangered lives.

The governor explained that the policy was adapted from the 2021 National Policy on Safe Schools and modified to address Katsina’s peculiar security and social challenges.

He said the framework focuses on prevention, preparedness, early warning systems, emergency response and recovery mechanisms, as well as psychosocial support for affected students and teachers.

The policy also integrates school safety into government planning and budgeting processes while outlining the responsibilities of key stakeholders, including security agencies, school authorities, parents, community leaders and government institutions.

Radda reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to ensuring that schools across the state remain secure and conducive for teaching and learning.
