IGP Disu, INEC boss Amupitan meet over election security strategy

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, SAN, have met in Abuja to develop a joint security strategy ahead of upcoming elections.

The high-level meeting, held at the Force Headquarters on Wednesday, also had in attendance members of the Force Management Team and INEC national commissioners representing various geopolitical zones.

The discussions focused on strengthening security arrangements for the forthcoming Ekiti and Osun off-cycle elections, upcoming bye-elections, and preparations for the 2027 general elections, against the backdrop of current national security concerns.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Amupitan, stressed the need for proactive security planning, specialised training, and an enabling environment that guarantees full participation of voters, including Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

In response, IGP Disu said the Nigeria Police Force had already begun strategic preparations, including intelligence mapping to curb electoral violence, cult-related activities and voter intimidation.

He also noted plans for coordinated logistics for the movement of personnel and sensitive materials, enhanced inter-agency communication, and measures to counter misinformation ahead of the polls.

“The Nigeria Police Force is committed to upholding public order with zero tolerance for professional misconduct,” the IGP said.

He assured that officers deployed for election duties would be guided strictly by the Constitution and the Electoral Act, adding that personnel are undergoing training on rules of engagement and human rights protection.

The IGP further warned that any officer found compromising electoral integrity would face disciplinary action.

Both institutions reaffirmed their commitment to ensuring a safe, credible and transparent electoral process, while calling for cooperation from all stakeholders ahead of the elections.
