Trump warns Iran to ‘get smart soon’ amid deepening standoff

US President Donald Trump has warned Iran to accept Washington’s demands on its nuclear programme, intensifying rhetoric as tensions between both countries continue to strain global energy markets.

In a post shared on Wednesday, Trump said Tehran must “get smart soon,” signalling a hardening stance as the United States maintains pressure through a naval blockade targeting Iranian ports.

“Iran can’t get their act together… They better get smart soon,” Trump wrote on his social media platform.

Reports in the US suggest the Trump administration is leaning towards rejecting Iran’s latest proposal aimed at easing tensions, including reopening the strategic Strait of Hormuz—a key global oil transit route.

The ongoing standoff follows months of conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, with both sides maintaining firm positions. While Washington insists on stricter controls or dismantling of Iran’s nuclear programme, Tehran has rejected what it describes as “illegal and irrational demands.”

An Iranian military spokesperson said the country does not consider the conflict over, warning that it retains “many cards” and could respond more forcefully if hostilities escalate.

Meanwhile, the economic toll is mounting. Iran’s currency has plunged to record lows, reflecting internal strain, while global oil prices have surged, with Brent crude trading above $110 per barrel.

Efforts at diplomacy appear stalled, despite mediation attempts involving regional actors. Qatar has warned that failure to reach a resolution could result in a prolonged “frozen conflict.”

The situation has also drawn international concern. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz criticised Washington’s approach, describing it as lacking a clear strategy—remarks Trump dismissed.
