The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign his position in the coming days as he prepares to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Tunji Bolaji, who revealed that the minister has already informed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of his intention.
According to the statement, the president has given his consent and blessing for Adelabu to pursue his governorship ambition.
Bolaji noted that the minister’s planned resignation is strategically timed to allow him conclude key reforms in the power sector and ensure a smooth transition.
He explained that ongoing efforts under Adelabu’s leadership include stabilising electricity generation amid challenges such as gas supply constraints, pipeline maintenance, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers.
During his meeting with the president, Adelabu reportedly presented his stewardship report, including key policy frameworks such as the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP), its Strategic Implementation Plan (SIP), and the Medium-Long Term Integrated Resource Plan designed to ensure sustainability in the sector.
President Tinubu was said to have commended the minister for his performance, particularly for laying a solid foundation for power sector reforms, while wishing him well in his political ambition.
Adelabu, who was appointed minister in August 2023 following the inauguration of the Federal Executive Council, had previously served as Deputy Governor (Operations) at the Central Bank of Nigeria.
He expressed appreciation to the president for his support, reaffirming his commitment to national development even as he prepares to exit the cabinet.
