NMA election crisis deepens as over 200 delegates converge on Abuja

A leadership crisis is brewing in the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) as over 200 delegates are expected in Abuja on Wednesday for an Emergency Delegates Meeting over controversies surrounding the association’s elections.

The meeting follows the disqualification of candidates in the Annual Delegates Meeting elections, a development that has sparked opposition from state chairmen, caucuses, and the Committee of Past Presidents.

In a statement issued by Dr. Oreyemi Ifedayo, Chairman of States Chairmen of the association, the emergency meeting was described as a last resort after efforts to resolve the dispute reportedly failed.

According to him, the Committee of Past Presidents had called for the reversal of the disqualifications to ensure fairness and a level playing field in the election process.

He expressed concern that ignoring those interventions could trigger instability within the association.

Delegates are expected to deliberate on the crisis and seek a path toward restoring peace and order in the NMA.

The development sets the stage for a potential leadership showdown within one of Nigeria’s most influential professional bodies.
