Mimiko dumps PDP amid fresh political realignments in Ondo

Former Ondo State Governor, Olusegun Mimiko, has formally resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), in what observers describe as a significant shift in the state’s political dynamics.

Mimiko’s resignation was conveyed in a letter dated April 10, 2026, addressed to the PDP Ward 7 Chairman in Ondo West Local Government Area.

In the letter, the former governor attributed his decision to prolonged speculation surrounding his political alignment, noting that his disengagement from active party affairs necessitated a clear declaration of his current stance.

“I hereby tender my resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), effective April 10, 2026, for strictly personal reasons,” he wrote.

He explained that his distance from party activities over time provided an opportunity for reflection and wide consultations, which ultimately informed his decision to quit the party.

Despite his exit, Mimiko stressed that he holds no grudges against any individual or group within the PDP, wishing the party well in its future endeavours.

“I remain committed to the wellbeing of our country and its democratic process, and will continue to work with like-minded individuals to advance these ideals,” he added.

Confirming the development, his former Chief Press Secretary, Eni Akinsola, said the ex-governor had indeed submitted his resignation letter, though he declined further comments.

Mimiko’s exit comes amid growing political permutations in Ondo State, especially following his recent engagements with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Political watchers believe the move signals a formal alignment with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), particularly as several of his loyalists had earlier defected to the party.

Notable allies, including Iranola Joseph Akinlaja and Jumoke Akindele, are among those who had previously pitched their tents with the APC, playing roles in the emergence of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

Analysts say Mimiko’s resignation merely confirms an ongoing political shift that has been unfolding in the state in recent months.
