Xi meets Russian FM as global leaders converge on Beijing over Middle East crisis

BEIJING — Chinese President Xi Jinping has met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing, as global diplomatic activity intensifies over the ongoing Middle East conflict and its impact on global energy security.

According to Chinese state media, Lavrov’s visit is part of a series of high-level engagements this week involving leaders and officials from countries directly or indirectly affected by the war.

Other dignitaries in Beijing include Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and Vietnamese leader To Lam, all of whom have held talks with Xi.

Following his meeting with Xi, Lavrov told reporters that Russia is prepared to “compensate” for China’s energy needs amid disruptions to global supply routes, particularly through the Strait of Hormuz.

Xi, in separate meetings, reiterated China’s position as a potential stabilising force in the crisis, telling the Abu Dhabi crown prince that Beijing would play a “constructive role” in promoting peace talks in the Middle East.

In discussions with Spain’s Sánchez, the Chinese leader warned of rising global instability, describing the current international environment as a “contest between justice and force,” while calling for stronger international cooperation.

Sánchez, in response, welcomed China’s involvement in efforts to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Analysts say the surge in diplomatic visits reflects growing global concern over the war’s impact on energy markets, trade routes, and geopolitical alliances, particularly among Gulf and European partners seeking stability.

Experts also suggest that some countries may be looking to China to use its influence over Iran to encourage restraint and support diplomatic negotiations aimed at easing tensions in the region.
