Ancelotti, who spoke amid growing debate over the 32-year-old’s international future, said the Santos forward still has a clear opportunity to prove his readiness, but stressed that only fully fit players will be selected.
The Italian tactician noted that Neymar’s recent return from a long-term knee injury has been encouraging, especially with his improved goal-scoring form, but maintained that his physical condition remains the key factor in selection decisions.
“He has two months to show he still has the qualities to play in the next World Cup,” Ancelotti said in comments attributed to GOAL.
“I believe he can return to 100%. I’ve said it before, and I’ll be clear: only physically ready players will get my call-up.
“After his knee injury, Neymar has made a good comeback; he is scoring goals. He needs to continue in this direction and improve his fitness. He’s on the right track.”
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time leading scorer with 79 goals and 59 assists in 128 international appearances, has struggled with recurring injuries in recent years, raising questions over his long-term role in the national team setup.
Despite the concerns, Ancelotti’s remarks suggest the forward remains firmly in contention, provided he can sustain his fitness and form in the coming months.
The Brazilian national team is expected to finalize key aspects of its World Cup squad planning closer to the tournament, with competition for attacking places intensifying as several younger players push for inclusion.
For Neymar, the coming weeks are expected to be decisive in determining whether he will feature in what could be his final World Cup appearance.
