Gateway Airport’ll push Ogun into top IGR states before 2031 — Tunde Lemo

Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo, has said the newly commissioned Gateway International Airport will position Ogun State among Nigeria’s top three states in internally generated revenue, IGR, within the next five years.

Lemo made the remark on Saturday during the inauguration of the airport by Bola Tinubu, who also inspected other ongoing projects in the state.

The airport, located in Iperu, was built by the Ogun State Government as a cargo and passenger facility expected to complement operations at Murtala Muhammed International Airport.

Speaking at the event, Lemo described the project as a strategic economic investment capable of driving export growth and boosting the state’s economy.

According to him, the airport’s major significance lies in its cargo capacity, particularly for the export of agricultural produce.

“This is a remarkable achievement. For me, it is not just because it will carry passengers, but because it will support export activities. A cargo airport will, by the grace of God, help export agricultural products, and that is a major takeaway that will boost export and the GDP of Ogun State,” he said.

He added that with the project in place, Ogun has the potential to emerge as one of the strongest revenue-generating states in the country before 2031.

“My expectation is that with this achievement, Ogun State should rank among the top three states, if not become the highest, in terms of IGR generation within the next five years,” Lemo stated.

President Tinubu, while commissioning the airport, said the project aligns with broader economic initiatives, including independent energy and gas investments designed to stimulate development across multiple sectors.

Lemo also appreciated residents of Ogun State and supporters for maintaining order during the President’s visit, noting that their conduct reflected the state’s peaceful disposition.

“I sincerely thank our supporters and the good people of Ogun State for their peaceful and respectful conduct. Their cooperation reflects the true character of our state,” he added.
