Obi urges Nigerians to reject Tinubu over power crisis

The Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians not to re-elect President Bola Tinubu, citing what he described as the administration’s failure to improve electricity supply.

In a post on his X account on Saturday, Obi recalled a campaign promise by Tinubu, in which he said Nigerians should deny him a second term if he failed to deliver stable power within four years.

“If I don’t give you constant electricity in four years, don’t vote for me for a second term,” Obi quoted the president as saying.

Obi argued that the current state of electricity supply shows the promise has not been fulfilled, alleging that power generation has dropped below the over 4,000 megawatts recorded in 2023, while tariffs have increased.

He also cited data indicating that Nigeria’s per capita electricity consumption stands at about 144 kilowatt-hours, compared to the African average of 617 kWh.

“When he took office in 2023, Nigeria had over 4,000 megawatts and lower tariffs. Today, supply is lower, and Nigerians are paying more,” he said.

Obi further referenced Tinubu’s recent visit to Jos, claiming the President cited lack of electricity at the airport as a reason for limiting his stay, which he described as reflective of the broader power challenges facing the country.

He urged Nigerians to use future elections to demand accountability and better governance, insisting that leadership must be defined by capacity and commitment to the welfare of citizens.
