Maiduguri Blasts: 23 Dead, 108 Injured as Suicide Bombers Hit Market, Hospital Gate, Flyover

The Borno State Police Command has confirmed that 23 persons were killed and 108 others injured following multiple bomb explosions in Maiduguri on Monday night.

The explosions, which occurred at about 7:24 p.m., reportedly struck three separate locations — the Monday Market, the gate of University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, and the Post Office flyover — throwing residents into panic.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Nahum Daso, preliminary investigations indicated that the attacks were carried out by suspected suicide bombers.

According to the statement, “A total of 23 persons lost their lives, while 108 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.”

Security agencies, including police tactical teams, military personnel and other joint security operatives, were immediately deployed to the affected locations to secure the areas and conduct sweep operations.

The police explosive ordnance disposal unit was also mobilised to scan the scenes for additional threats.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Naziru Abdulmajid, visited the affected areas for on-the-spot assessment and assured residents of intensified security measures.

Victims were evacuated to hospitals by emergency responders, including National Emergency Management Agency and Borno State Emergency Management Agency.

Police said calm has been restored in the affected areas, while investigations continue to determine the full circumstances surrounding the attacks and apprehend those responsible.

Meanwhile, Babagana Zulum condemned the incident, describing the attacks as barbaric and unacceptable.

The governor urged residents to remain calm and vigilant, stressing that security agencies are working to prevent further attacks.
