PDP Facing Difficult Moment After Zamfara Governor’s Exit — Makinde

Governor of Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has described the current situation within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as a challenging phase following the defection of Dauda Lawal from the party.

Lawal, the governor of Zamfara State, on Monday announced his resignation from the PDP, leaving Makinde and Bala Mohammed as the only governors currently elected on the platform of the party.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja during the expanded meeting of the PDP Board of Trustees, Makinde admitted that the development poses a serious test for both the party and the nation’s democratic process.

According to him, the political situation unfolding in the country is unusual and has raised concerns among seasoned political observers.

“It is indeed a challenging time for us as leaders and members of the Peoples Democratic Party. It is equally a difficult moment for democracy in Nigeria,” Makinde said.

The governor noted that discussions with individuals who have closely followed Nigeria’s political evolution indicate that the present political landscape is unprecedented.

“I have spoken with people who are well-grounded in the political history of this country, and many of them say they have never seen a political climate like what we are witnessing today,” he added.

Makinde, however, maintained that despite the reduction in the number of PDP governors, the remaining leaders of the party are not discouraged.

“At the moment, we are only two remaining governors elected on the PDP platform, but we are not bothered,” he said.

He urged party leaders and members to remain mindful of how their actions during this period would be judged in the future.

“We must carefully consider the roles we play individually and collectively as a party because history will certainly record our conduct during this period,” he stated.

Expressing optimism about the future of the party, the governor said difficult times are temporary and expressed hope that the PDP would overcome its current challenges.

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning,” Makinde added.
