Osun 2026 Governorship Poll and the Imperative of Peaceful Campaigns

With the official commencement of campaigns for the August 15, 2026 governorship election in Osun State, the political atmosphere in the state is expectedly becoming more active.

Elections remain the cornerstone of democratic governance, providing citizens the opportunity to choose leaders and determine the direction of public policy. However, the credibility of any election often depends as much on the conduct of campaigns as on the process of voting itself.

The unfolding political contest involving the ruling Accord Party under Governor Ademola Adeleke, the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) whose candidate is Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) represented by Najeem Salam, presents an important opportunity for political actors to demonstrate commitment to democratic values.

While competition among parties is natural in any democracy, it must be conducted within the limits of civility, tolerance and respect for the rule of law.

Experience from past elections in Nigeria shows that campaign seasons are sometimes characterised by inflammatory rhetoric, misinformation and unnecessary hostility among supporters of rival parties.

Such tendencies not only undermine the democratic process but also threaten the peace and stability of communities. It is therefore imperative for political parties and their candidates to place emphasis on issue-based campaigns that focus on governance, economic development, infrastructure, education and the welfare of the people.

Campaign platforms should serve as avenues for the articulation of clear policies and practical solutions to the challenges facing Osun State.

Voters deserve to hear concrete proposals from candidates on how they intend to address unemployment, improve public services and stimulate economic growth within the state.

Beyond political parties, Patriotic Insights News believes that traditional rulers must play a stabilising role throughout the campaign period. As custodians of culture and symbols of unity within their domains, their voices carry significant influence.

They must therefore encourage peaceful coexistence among their subjects and discourage any actions that could incite violence or division.

Religious leaders also have a critical role in fostering harmony during the election season. Given the influence they wield among their congregations, they must promote messages of tolerance, patience and mutual respect.

Places of worship should remain centres of moral guidance that emphasise justice, peace and responsible citizenship.

The youth, who represent a large and vibrant segment of the population, must equally recognise their responsibility in safeguarding democratic stability.

Too often, young people are drawn into acts of political violence or manipulation by desperate politicians. Such actions only undermine their own future and the development of their communities. Instead, the youth should channel their energy into constructive political participation, engage in informed discussions about policies and vote according to their conscience.

Security agencies must also discharge their duties with professionalism and neutrality. Their role is crucial in maintaining law and order and ensuring that political actors can campaign freely without intimidation or fear.

Impartial enforcement of the law will strengthen public confidence in the electoral process.

Equally important is the responsibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which must ensure strict compliance with electoral guidelines and guarantee a transparent process for all stakeholders.

A credible election depends largely on the fairness and efficiency of the electoral management body.

Ultimately, the Osun governorship election represents another opportunity to deepen democratic culture and reinforce peaceful political competition in Nigeria. Political actors, traditional institutions, religious leaders, youths, security agencies and the electorate must therefore rise above narrow interests and work collectively to ensure that the election reflects the true will of the people.

If conducted peacefully and transparently, the election will not only produce legitimate leadership for Osun State but also strengthen public confidence in the democratic process. That outcome must remain the collective goal of all stakeholders.
