The push for the establishment of state police in Nigeria has gained fresh momentum following the inauguration of a high-powered committee by the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, to develop an operational framework for its implementation.
Disu, who was recently sworn in by President Bola Tinubu as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, declared that decentralised policing “has come to stay.”
Speaking after his swearing-in at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the IGP said the committee’s assignment was both timely and significant in light of Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.
The move also comes amid renewed national debate over policing reforms, as well as President Tinubu’s call on the National Assembly to amend the 1999 Constitution to create room for state police as part of broader efforts to strengthen security across the country.
According to Disu, the committee has been tasked with designing a practical framework that will enable state policing to function effectively without undermining national security structures.
The panel, chaired by Professor Olu Ogunsakin, has been given four weeks to submit its report.
Other members of the committee include CP Emmanuel Ojukwu (retd), CP Bode Ojajuni, DCP Okebuchi Ogora, ACP Ikechukwu Okafor, and CSP Tolulope Ipinmisho, among others.
The IGP noted that the framework would help guide discussions on how decentralised policing can be implemented while maintaining coordination between federal and state security institutions.
