Former Governor of Bayelsa State and Senator representing Bayelsa West Senatorial District, Seriake Dickson, has officially defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the newly registered Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
Dickson announced his defection on Thursday during a world press conference held at his Abuja residence, citing the deepening crisis and declining fortunes of the PDP.
The former governor lamented that the opposition party, which once inspired hope among Nigerians, had deteriorated significantly.
“The PDP is sick and presently in the ICU,” Dickson declared, expressing concern over the party’s internal divisions.
He further accused some PDP governors of allegedly weakening the party by aligning with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a situation he said has further eroded the party’s strength as a credible opposition platform.
According to him, the prevailing circumstances made it necessary for him to chart a new political course by joining the NDC, a political party recently registered by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Shortly after the announcement, Dickson was formally received by the leadership of the NDC and presented with the party’s flag alongside a membership card numbered 001, signifying his status as one of the party’s pioneering members.
Dickson served as Bayelsa State governor from 2012 to 2020 before he was elected into the Senate in 2023 under the platform of the PDP.
His defection comes amid growing concerns over internal crises within the PDP and increasing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
