The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof. Joash Amupitan, has identified logistics as the commission’s biggest challenge in conducting credible elections in Nigeria.
Amupitan made the disclosure on Sunday while speaking at a Citizens’ Town Hall Meeting on the Electoral Act held in Abuja, stressing that the success of any election largely depends on the effectiveness of its logistical arrangements.
According to him, the quality of an election outcome is closely tied to how well materials, personnel and operational processes are coordinated before and during voting.
“An election can only be as successful as its logistics. Once there is a failure in logistics, the process is already facing serious difficulties,” he said.
The INEC chairman explained that prior to elections, the commission usually engages stakeholders, including media organisations and civil society groups, to define expectations and improve transparency in the electoral process.
He acknowledged that previous elections experienced logistical setbacks, noting that some of the challenges were human-related and are currently being addressed by the commission.
“We must admit that there were logistical issues, some of which were purely human errors. However, we are working seriously to correct them,” Amupitan added.
He appealed to Nigerians to be realistic in their expectations, noting that while the commission is committed to improving electoral standards, achieving a completely flawless election may not yet be possible.
Amupitan assured citizens that INEC remains determined to deliver better-organised and more credible elections in future electoral cycles, particularly as preparations gradually begin toward the 2027 general elections.
