Taraba govt sets up reconciliation panel to resolve UMCN, GMC dispute

Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State has constituted a Reconciliation and Unity Committee aimed at restoring peace and strengthening harmony between the United Methodist Church of Nigeria (UMCN) and the Global Methodist Church (GMC).

The committee, made up of prominent Christian leaders and representatives of security agencies, is mandated to promote dialogue, foster reconciliation and encourage a mutually beneficial relationship between the two church bodies.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Secretary to the State Government, Chief Gebon Timothy Kataps, the initiative underscores the administration’s commitment to peaceful coexistence and religious harmony across the state.

According to the statement, Rev. Isaiah Magaji Jirape will serve as Chairman of the committee, while members include Bishop Foreman Nedison, Bishop Innocent Solomon, Rev. Aliyuda Iro Moses and Rev. Andemun R. Musa.

Security agencies are also represented on the panel, including officials from the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). A representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the state will serve as Member/Secretary.

The state government expressed confidence that the committee would work towards bridging differences between the two denominations, rebuilding trust and promoting lasting unity within the Christian community.

Governor Kefas reiterated his administration’s commitment to peace-building initiatives, stressing that dialogue, cooperation and mutual understanding remain vital tools for resolving disputes and strengthening communal relations in Taraba State.
