The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has emphasised that decisions of the Supreme Court go beyond resolving disputes between parties, stressing that its judgments shape the nation’s constitutional development and impact generations yet unborn.
Justice Kekere-Ekun made the remark on Wednesday during the swearing-in ceremony of Justice Kayode Oyewole as a Justice of the Supreme Court held in Abuja.
According to the CJN, pronouncements of the apex court carry enduring legal and constitutional consequences, noting that the authority of the court rests on the strength of its reasoning, adherence to due process, and the integrity of its justices.
“The judgments of this court do not speak only to the parties before it; they speak to generations yet unborn,” she said, adding that the Supreme Court’s influence derives from moral authority rather than force.
She explained that adjudication at the apex court level transcends dispute resolution and requires careful protection of judicial precedents, principled evolution of the law, and unwavering commitment to constitutional supremacy.
The CJN urged the newly sworn-in justice to discharge his duties with courage, independence, and intellectual discipline, noting that decisions of the Supreme Court often attract intense public scrutiny.
She said the judicial oath demands moral courage in difficult moments, restraint during periods of heightened public emotion, and firmness against pressures capable of undermining judicial independence.
Justice Kekere-Ekun further encouraged Justice Oyewole to uphold the Constitution without fear or favour and to express principled dissent when necessary.
“A dissenting opinion, when delivered with intellectual honesty and courtesy, is not a sign of division but may become the foundation for future legal development,” she stated.
The CJN also disclosed that with Oyewole’s elevation, the Supreme Court has now attained its full constitutional complement, describing the development as vital to improving efficiency and strengthening the court’s capacity to handle cases effectively.
She noted that a complete bench would enable the apex court to constitute stronger panels and better manage its growing caseload.
Justice Oyewole was thereafter formally sworn in as Justice of the Supreme Court.
