Acting Inspector-General of Police, Mr Olatunji Disu, has assured Nigerians that the era of impunity within the Nigeria Police Force is over.
Disu gave the assurance on Wednesday while addressing State House correspondents shortly after being sworn in by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Reflecting on the ceremony, the new police chief said he was deeply moved as the President highlighted his career achievements and past assignments.
“The way the President was mentioning a lot of activities about me, mentioning areas I have worked, mentioning successes I’ve recorded as a policeman, brought emotion to me, almost brought me to tears,” he said.
Outlining his priorities, Disu pledged to promote discipline, professionalism and respect for human rights within the Force.
“I will let them know that the era of impunity is over. I will ensure that I train them and encourage them to follow human rights. I will ensure that they know that I will try to follow a regime of zero tolerance for corruption,” he stated.
He added that the Police cannot succeed without public trust and cooperation.
“Most importantly, I’m going to drum it into them that we can never succeed without the cooperation of members of the public,” Disu said.
