The Anambra State Government has appealed to transporters to resume full operations on Mondays, as part of efforts to put an end to the long-standing sit-at-home tradition in the state.
Speaking during a one-day training and retraining program for commercial drivers and riders, Anambra State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, stressed that the active participation of transporters was crucial for reviving economic activities, especially at the start of the week.
Dr. Mefor said, “Transporters play a pivotal role in boosting the state’s economy on Mondays. Traders have complied with government directives, but the lack of adequate transport remains a major hurdle for both businesses and customers.”
He noted that civil servants, banks, and schools are fully operational on Mondays, while markets such as the Main Market operate at full capacity. “The transport sector is currently the only sector lagging behind,” he added, urging drivers and riders to embrace the initiative to support the state’s economic growth.
The training, organised by the Ministry of Transport in collaboration with Rotary International District 9142, aimed to equip commercial operators with modern skills and knowledge to navigate the state’s transport sector safely and efficiently.
Commissioner for Transport, Mrs. Patricia Igwebuike, who officially declared the event open, highlighted the need for drivers and riders to stay updated on road safety practices and professional standards to enhance public confidence in the sector.
Dr. Mefor concluded that seizing this opportunity would not only improve the livelihoods of transporters but also contribute to a more vibrant and prosperous Anambra State, as the government continues its efforts to reclaim Mondays from disruption.
