Abubakar Malami, former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, now faces a new judge in his ongoing money laundering trials, following procedural withdrawals.
The Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Tsoho, reassigned the two high-profile cases to Justice Joyce Abdulmalik, who has scheduled proceedings for February 27. The move comes after Justice Obiora Egwuatu recused himself on February 12, citing personal reasons and the interest of justice.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Malami on a 16-count charge of money laundering. Investigations by the anti-graft agency revealed properties worth N212 billion allegedly linked to the former AGF during his tenure. The assets, including hotels, residential buildings, schools, land, and a printing press, are spread across Kebbi, Kano, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
Malami, alongside his son, Abubakar Abdulaziz Malami, and wife, Bashir Asabe, is accused of laundering N8.7 billion. The defendants pleaded not guilty. Separately, the EFCC is seeking the forfeiture of 57 properties suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities.
Earlier in the case, Justice Emeka Nwite handled the matters during the court’s vacation period. Upon resumption, the cases were assigned to Justice Egwuatu, who later withdrew and returned the files to the Chief Judge.
Meanwhile, Malami and his son also face trial before Justice Abdulmalik on charges of terrorism financing and illegal possession of firearms.
