The Osun State Police Command has launched an investigation into an alleged shooting and reckless pursuit involving a student and his family in Osogbo.
In a statement on Monday, the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, said the command’s “attention had been drawn to a viral video and a press release by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Southwest Zone D, dated 22 February 2026, concerning the incident.”
The police confirmed that a preliminary review of the incident, reported to have occurred between Itaolokan Junction and Oke Ayepe, had begun. “Preliminary findings are being gathered, including operational records and eyewitness accounts,” the statement said.
According to the statement, the Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Gotan, represented by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations and other senior officers, visited the victims at the hospital. The police said the victims were responding to treatment and that the command had taken responsibility for their medical bills. “The Command has taken it upon itself to take care of the medical bills,” the statement added.
CP Gotan has ordered a thorough and transparent investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident, in line with established procedures of the Nigeria Police Force. The statement noted that a team of officers suspected to have been involved is currently under investigation.
The command stressed that “any unauthorised or reckless discharge of firearms, if established, would not be condoned, and officers found culpable would face appropriate disciplinary consequences.”
The police reaffirmed their commitment to professionalism, accountability, transparency, and the protection of human rights, urging anyone with verifiable information, video evidence, or firsthand accounts to assist the investigation. They also appealed to student bodies and other stakeholders to remain calm and allow due process to take its course.
