The Lagos State chapter of the Joint Health Sector Unions (JOHESU) has suspended its ongoing strike following a decisive intervention by the Lagos State House of Assembly.
The union’s Lagos State Secretary, Kabiawu Gbolahan, announced the suspension over the weekend, noting that extensive consultations with key stakeholders, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), and other professional bodies, informed the decision.
Gbolahan explained that the state legislature’s “timely and decisive intervention,” alongside firm assurances that the union’s demands would be favourably considered, prompted JOHESU members to resume work immediately across all health facilities.
“No member of JOHESU should be victimised for participating in the industrial action,” he stressed.
Confirming the development, the Lagos State Government said an agreement had been reached following a high-level meeting aimed at resolving the dispute. The government described the discussions as frank and constructive, with both parties committing to protect public health and restore normal operations in healthcare facilities.
“The state government reaffirmed its commitment to addressing the union’s demands within the framework of established regulations and provided clear timelines for resolving outstanding concerns,” the statement read.
JOHESU’s leadership reportedly consulted its members before calling off the strike, citing the overriding interest of public health and industrial harmony. Both parties also agreed to maintain dialogue and ensure that agreements reached are fully implemented.
The government further recognised the vital role of allied health professionals in healthcare delivery and assured improved working conditions and equitable treatment. Residents were thanked for their patience, with assurances of uninterrupted access to quality healthcare services.
Healthcare workers are expected to resume duties promptly as consultations continue to translate the resolutions into lasting outcomes.
