Peter Obi Vows to Contest 2027 Presidential Election, Pledges Generational Change

Former Governor of Anambra State, Peter Obi, has reaffirmed his determination to contest the 2027 presidential election, insisting that no obstacle—real or imagined—will stop him from participating.

Obi made the declaration at the OBIDIENT Conference and the official launch of his political movement under the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The ex-governor explained that his recent departure from the Labour Party (LP) was driven by concerns that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) would not recognise the party’s leadership while he remained a member.

“I left the Labour Party when I was informed that as long as I remain, INEC would not recognise its leadership. It became clear that the federal government did not want me on the ballot,” Obi said.

Despite the perceived political hurdles, Obi vowed, “I want to assure you that I will contest the coming election—even if it is held in their bedroom. And if they refuse to transmit the results, we will ensure they are transmitted.”

He also criticised the borrowing record of the current administration, pointing out the long-term burden it places on future generations. “This administration has borrowed more than any previous one. Most of these loans will be repaid between 2045 and 2050, long after those responsible are gone,” Obi said.

Highlighting his focus on human capital, the former governor promised that his administration would prioritise education and healthcare. He recounted his personal commitment to transparency and integrity during his tenure, noting that he and his family never exploited government resources for personal gain.

Tanko Yunusa, worldwide coordinator of the OBIDIENT Movement, urged supporters to mobilise ahead of 2027 and back the ADC. Ben Smith, Akwa Ibom State coordinator, added that the election presents an opportunity for generational change, saying, “The 2027 presidential election is not about an individual but about jobs for youths, security for families, dignity for workers, and hope for every Nigerian.”
