The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu for attending a fishing festival amid rising insecurity across the country, saying recent abductions and killings show a worsening security breakdown.
In a statement issued on Sunday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the party said the President’s presence at a festival in Argungu while attacks and kidnappings continue reflects misplaced priorities and a troubling disconnect from realities on the ground.
The opposition party claimed that about 1,300 Nigerians were killed within 41 days, with many others, including women and children, still in captivity in different parts of the country.
According to the statement, the party is particularly worried about a viral video allegedly released by abductors linked to the Kaiama incident in Kwara State, where the gunmen reportedly disputed official figures on the number of victims.
ADC said the development suggests growing boldness among armed groups and warned that parts of the Kwara corridor risk becoming a strategic foothold for terrorists if urgent steps are not taken.
The party noted that the Kaiama axis links directly to Oyo State and cautioned that sustained insurgent activity in the area could expose neighbouring regions to further threats.
It also expressed concern over reported terrorist activities in Patigi Local Government Area and around the Kainji Lake forest belt, describing the trend as a dangerous expansion pattern.
“When non-state actors openly challenge official casualty figures, it signals an erosion of deterrence and raises serious questions about the management of both security and information,” the statement said, adding that kidnapping is fast becoming a commercial enterprise driven by ransom expectations.
The party called on the Federal Government to launch coordinated rescue operations, conduct a security audit of the Kaiama–Kainji Lake forest corridor, strengthen interstate security collaboration across Kwara, Niger and Oyo axes, and provide transparent public briefings on the incidents.
ADC added that it would continue to hold the government accountable on security while supporting genuine efforts aimed at defeating terrorism nationwide.
