US Lawmakers Move to Sanction Fulani Militias, Ex-Kano Governor Kwankwaso

United States lawmakers have introduced a new bill aimed at holding human rights violators in Nigeria accountable, with specific focus on Fulani militias and former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

The legislation, titled Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, proposes measures that could include sanctions against armed groups accused of sectarian violence, as well as government officials who have enacted or supported laws viewed as restrictive to religious freedoms.

US Congressman Riley Moore, a Republican, disclosed the development on X, stating, “Today, I am proud to introduce the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026 with Rep. Chris Smith. The US is a Christian nation. As such, we must stand with persecuted Christians around the world.”

The bill seeks to reinforce previous US initiatives in Nigeria, building on President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern and the recent US-Nigeria security framework agreement.

Sean Nelson, Senior Counsel for Global Religious Freedom, lauded the move, describing it as a significant step in strengthening accountability measures. “This legislation increases oversight on human rights violations, including recommendations for sanctions against Fulani militias and former Kano State Governor Kwankwaso, who introduced Sharia criminal law during his tenure,” he said.

The proposed legislation comes amid growing international scrutiny over rising sectarian tensions and violence in Nigeria, highlighting concerns about religious freedom and security in the country.
