The Abia State Government has dismissed as false a report circulating on social media claiming that Governor Alex Otti had taken the Federal Government of Nigeria to the World Court over the approval of a cargo airport in Aba.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Okey Kanu, described the story as misleading, fabricated, and intended to misinform the public.
He clarified that Governor Otti has neither initiated nor petitioned any international court against the Nigerian government on the matter or any other issue.
Kanu said, “At no time has the Abia State Government contemplated, let alone initiated, any international litigation on such matters. The suggestion that a sitting governor would bypass constitutional processes to accuse Nigeria of marginalisation or genocide before an imaginary ‘World Court’ is a reckless falsehood.”
The commissioner added that the narrative alleging that the governor claimed that Igbos are being denied rights in Lagos is a deliberate attempt to inflame ethnic sentiments and tarnish the governor’s reputation.
He further accused opposition elements and failed political actors of spreading the story as part of a coordinated smear campaign aimed at undermining the achievements of the Otti-led administration.
“Governor Alex Otti remains committed to national unity, lawful engagement, and constructive collaboration with federal authorities, not sensationalism or ethnic blackmail. We urge the public to disregard this fake report and call on media practitioners to verify information from credible sources before publication,” Kanu stated.
The statement concluded by warning that the government reserves the right to take legal action against individuals or platforms that deliberately propagate falsehoods capable of disrupting public peace and confidence in government.
Governor Otti, according to the statement, continues to focus on strategic projects and sustainable development initiatives that benefit the people of Abia State and Nigeria at large.
