Residents of Danhonu II community in New Millennium City, Chikun Local Government Area of Kaduna State, staged a protest on Monday over a fresh wave of kidnappings that have left the community gripped by fear. The demonstration followed the abduction of seven individuals by suspected bandits in the early hours of Sunday.
The protesters marched to the Millennium City Divisional Police Headquarters, blocking the main access road and chanting solidarity songs, demanding urgent government and security intervention.
According to eyewitnesses, the attack occurred around 11:30 p.m., when a gang of armed men stormed the community, targeting members of two families. Those abducted include Malam Yahaya Yusuf, his wife Latifat Yusuf, and their sons Abdulgafar and Abdulqudus, as well as Mrs. Abdulrazak Jimoh and two of her children, whose identities have not yet been disclosed.
Residents told Patriotic Insights News that this incident raises the number of kidnappings in the community to 11 cases within a few months, heightening suspicion that the attacks may be selectively targeting non-indigenes, possibly aided by informants.
One anonymous protester said, “In the last month alone, more than four residents have been kidnapped. Yesterday, no fewer than 15 bandits armed with AK-47 rifles invaded the community and abducted five residents. It is terrifying.”
Mr. Akoh Salifu, Chairman of the Danhonu II Landlords Association and leader of the protest, lamented the worsening security situation. “We are here because we can no longer live in peace. The repeated kidnappings have made life unbearable. Some youths even tried pursuing the bandits into the bush after Sunday’s attack, but they could not catch up,” he said.
Kaduna State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Mansir Hassan, confirmed the incident, stating that police responded promptly alongside soldiers. He noted that poor road access and difficult terrain allowed the kidnappers to escape despite an exchange of gunfire. Hassan added that Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, had visited the community, assuring residents that the command was considering the establishment of a police outpost in the area.
The community continues to call for urgent intervention to end the cycle of violence and restore peace to Danhonu II.
