Impeach Akpabio Now!” — Aisha Yesufu Blasts Senators Over Electronic Transmission of Results

 

Frontline activist, Aisha Yesufu, on Sunday launched a scathing attack on members of the Nigerian Senate, urging them to immediately commence impeachment proceedings against Senate President Godswill Akpabio over the controversy surrounding electronic transmission of election results.

Yesufu accused senators of hypocrisy and complicity, insisting they must stop shifting blame while failing to take decisive legislative action to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral process.

In a strongly worded message posted on her X handle, the activist charged lawmakers to abandon what she described as a “bad cop, good cop” posture and act in defense of Nigerians’ democratic rights.

According to her, both supporters and critics within the chamber share responsibility for any failure to enshrine real-time electronic transmission of election results into law.

“Dear Senators, stop playing bad cop, good cop with us. None of you is blameless,” she wrote. “You are either active or passive participants in disenfranchising the Nigerian people and subverting their power to choose who governs them.”

She faulted what she called the preference for media engagements over concrete legislative battles, urging lawmakers to move beyond press briefings and online discussions to decisive action on the Senate floor.

“You are supposed to be the voices of the people. Instead of press conferences, Twitter spaces and media appearances, go to the Red Chamber and fight for the soul of Nigeria,” she added.

Yesufu stressed that the Senate possesses the constitutional authority to guarantee the passage of laws supporting real-time electronic transmission of election results, pointing to past decisive actions by the chamber as proof of its powers.

She further dismissed claims that the Senate President alone is responsible for the situation, maintaining that lawmakers have the numbers and authority required to remove him if they believe he is an obstacle.

“Stop telling us Akpabio is the problem. You all have the power to impeach Akpabio. Do it,” she said.

Her comments come amid heightened debate and public scrutiny over proposed amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Act and the role of technology in future elections.
