Oluwatosin Babatunde, a Social Commentator and advocate for good governance, has criticized the Nigerian Senate’s decision to reject a proposed amendment that would make electronic transmission of election results mandatory.
He stated this when featuring on a radio program in Ikirun, Osun State, on Thursday, describing the move as “a setback for transparency and electoral credibility in Nigeria.” Babatunde warned that public trust in the electoral process is at stake.
“Electronic transmission of results is not just about technology; it is a critical safeguard against manipulation and irregularities during result collation. By rejecting it, the Senate risks undermining confidence in election outcomes,” he said.
Babatunde also noted that the current law, which leaves result transmission at the discretion of electoral officials, creates ambiguity and opens the door for loopholes that could compromise election integrity.
“Credible elections form the bedrock of democratic governance. Any policy that weakens transparency will inevitably attract public skepticism and erode trust in our institutions,” he added.
He urged the National Assembly to reconsider its position, engage key stakeholders, and align Nigeria’s electoral framework with global best practices to ensure elections are fast, verifiable, and widely trusted.
