Makinde Signals Political Succession Plan, Says Next Oyo Governor Will Come From His Team

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has declared that the next governor of the state will emerge from his political camp, expressing confidence that his administration’s legacy will be sustained beyond the end of his tenure in May 2027.

Makinde made the remark on Sunday during a thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral of St. Peter’s, Aremo, Ibadan, as part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of the creation of Oyo State.

The governor assured residents that the progress recorded under his leadership would not be reversed, noting that his team has laid a solid foundation for continued development and good governance in the state.

According to him, members of his administration will continue to serve the state in various capacities after his exit from office, ensuring continuity in policies and programmes.

Makinde, who read the second Bible lesson from Matthew 5:1–12 at the service, attributed his emergence as governor in 2019 after eight years of political contest to divine grace and mercy. He congratulated citizens on witnessing the golden jubilee celebration, describing it as a milestone made possible by God.

In a goodwill message, the former Governor of Anambra State and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr. Peter Obi, commended Makinde’s leadership style and developmental strides in Oyo State.

Obi praised the governor’s commitment to public service and urged political leaders across the country to remain accountable and people-focused.

He said, “I thank Governor Makinde for faithfully serving the people of Oyo State. As the state celebrates its 50th anniversary, I pray that the next fifty years will be even more exemplary.

“Nigeria is not a poor country but is poorly governed. We politicians must be remembered in prayers, that God should touch our hearts to use public resources for public good.”

Delivering a sermon titled Gratitude, the Archbishop of Ibadan Province, Most Rev’d Williams Aladekugbe, said Oyo State has witnessed God’s favour over the past five decades.

He commended past and present leaders for their contributions to the growth of the state and lauded Makinde for people-oriented policies, infrastructural development, improved welfare for workers and pensioners, and the promotion of peaceful coexistence.

Special prayers were offered for the governor, former leaders, and the nation, with a call for sustained good governance in Oyo State.
