Oluwatosin Babatunde Commends Northern CAN, Urges Protection of INEC’s Independence

Oluwatosin Babatunde, a respected advocate of good governance, has commended the Northern Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) for its stance rejecting calls for the removal of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan.

Speaking on a programme on a private radio station in Ikirun, Osun State, monitored by Patriotic Insights News, Babatunde described Northern CAN’s intervention as a “timely and responsible call” that underscores the importance of keeping religion separate from political controversies. He stressed that the independence of electoral institutions is vital to ensuring free, fair, and credible elections in Nigeria.

“Faith-based organisations have a critical role in promoting peace and stability,” Babatunde said. “Northern CAN’s position reinforces the principle that electoral matters should not be subjected to partisan or religious pressures. Protecting INEC’s independence is essential for maintaining public trust in the democratic process.”

While applauding the association, he also urged political actors, civil society, and citizens to engage in constructive dialogue, uphold transparency, and ensure accountability in governance. Babatunde emphasised that defending electoral institutions does not mean ignoring legitimate public concerns but rather safeguarding democracy through principled and peaceful interventions.

Northern CAN’s statement comes amid growing debate over Prof. Amupitan’s tenure, with some calls for his removal being criticised as attempts to politicise religious sentiments.
