Ganduje’s corruption case unaffected by Yusuf’s defection to APC — Kano Commissioner

The Kano State Government has clarified that the corruption allegations levelled against former governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, remain unaffected by the recent defection of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Thursday during an interview on ARISE Television’s Prime Time, the State Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, said the defection of Governor Yusuf does not in any way alter the legal processes surrounding the allegations against the ex-governor.

Governor Yusuf had last Friday resigned his membership of the NNPP and formally joined the APC, a development that has continued to generate political reactions within and outside the state.

Waiya explained that under Nigeria’s legal system, allegations alone do not amount to guilt until proven by a competent court of law.

“As far as the Nigerian legal system is concerned, a person may face several allegations of corruption, but what matters most is a court pronouncement of guilt,” he said.

According to him, the corruption case involving Ganduje is still before the courts and remains subject to judicial determination.

“The allegation is still undergoing judicial processes. Kano is evolving, and we are carrying everyone along. Dr. Ganduje has not been found guilty of the allegations. No court of law has ever pronounced him guilty,” Waiya stated.

He added that the present administration has resolved not to interfere with ongoing judicial proceedings, stressing that due process must be allowed to take its full course.

“We have learnt from past experiences. We do not intend to intervene in judicial matters,” the commissioner said.
