2027: Amosun backs Tinubu’s second term, says South deserves full eight years

Former Ogun State governor and senator, Ibikunle Amosun, has thrown his weight behind President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027, insisting that fairness, equity and national cohesion demand that the South completes an eight-year presidential tenure.

Amosun spoke on Sunday at the Ake Palace Pavilion, Abeokuta, while addressing leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during activities marking his 68th birthday.

Reaffirming his loyalty to the ruling party, the former governor described the zoning and rotational principle between the North and South as a stabilising arrangement that must be respected in the interest of national unity.

According to him, President Tinubu’s emergence followed the completion of eight years by former President Muhammadu Buhari from the North, making it appropriate for the South to retain the presidency for another term.

“In the interest of Nigeria, we must observe rotation. The last president from the North spent eight years in office. It is now the turn of the South, and President Tinubu is in the saddle,” Amosun said.

He added that although Tinubu hails from the South-West, his leadership transcends regional boundaries, stressing that the President governs for all Nigerians.

“He represents Nigeria first, but he is also a son of the South. Respecting this rotational understanding is a no-brainer for anyone who genuinely desires unity and fairness in this country,” he said.

While acknowledging that some policies of the Tinubu administration have caused temporary hardship, Amosun maintained that the ongoing reforms are already yielding positive signs and would eventually translate into sustainable economic growth.

He urged Nigerians to exercise patience, expressing confidence that the Renewed Hope Agenda would deliver lasting dividends of democracy.

Amosun, who described himself as a founding leader of the APC in Ogun State, insisted that his commitment to the party remains unshaken.

“The history of APC in Ogun State cannot be written without mentioning my role and that of other early leaders. You do not destroy what you helped to build,” he said.

The event attracted several party stalwarts, including former Minister of Mines and Steel Development Lekan Adegbite; former Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, Sarafa Tunji Isola; former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Tunde Lemo; and former senators Iyabo Anisulowo and Gbenga Obadara, among others.
