Kano Gov Yusuf, 29 Federal, State Lawmakers Dump NNPP

 

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has resigned his membership of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal crises and protracted leadership disputes within the party.

The governor’s exit was followed by the resignation of eight members of the House of Representatives, 21 members of the Kano State House of Assembly and 44 local government chairmen across the state.

In a resignation letter addressed to the Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward of the NNPP in Gwale Local Government Area, Yusuf attributed his decision to persistent internal disagreements and ongoing legal battles that have continued to weaken the party’s cohesion.

He said the lingering leadership tussles and court cases had created widespread disenfranchisement among members, resulting in divisions that now appear irreconcilable at both state and national levels.

“Recent developments within the party, marked by leadership disagreements and unresolved legal processes presently before the courts, have continued to undermine unity and confidence within the party,” Yusuf stated.

According to the letter, the resignation takes effect from Sunday, January 25, 2026.

The governor, however, expressed appreciation to the NNPP for providing him the platform to serve the people of Kano State, noting that his decision was taken after careful reflection and in the overall interest of peace and stability in the state.

“I remain sincerely grateful to the party, its leadership and members across Kano State for the support, goodwill and cooperation extended to me throughout my political journey since 2022,” he said.

Yusuf stressed that his resignation was taken in good faith and without ill will, adding that he remains committed to the unity, peace and development of Kano State.

Receiving the resignation letter on behalf of the party, Zubairu, an NNPP ward official, acknowledged the internal challenges confronting the party and commended the governor for his performance in office.

He described Yusuf as one of the most performing governors produced by the NNPP, citing achievements in infrastructure, urban renewal, education, healthcare and economic empowerment.
