Kano Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf Quits NNPP Over Internal Crises

Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), citing deepening internal disputes and leadership wrangles within the party.

The governor’s decision, announced on Friday through his spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, takes effect from January 25, 2026. In a resignation letter addressed to the NNPP Chairman of Diso-Chiranchi Ward, Gwale Local Government Area, Yusuf expressed gratitude to the party for offering him a political platform and support since 2022.

“I remain sincerely appreciative of the opportunity given to me by the party, its leadership, and members across Kano State to be part of its political journey,” the governor said.

However, Yusuf pointed to unresolved internal disputes and ongoing legal battles as the main reasons for his exit. “Persistent leadership disagreements and ongoing court processes have unsettled the party’s structure at both state and national levels,” he added.

He further lamented that the conflicts had widened divisions among party members, causing growing disenfranchisement and weakening cohesion.

Governor Yusuf stated that his resignation followed careful reflection and was guided by what he considered the best interest of Kano residents. “After careful reflection, I have concluded that stepping down is in the best interest of the people of Kano State,” he noted.

The development comes amid speculation that the governor may join another political platform ahead of the 2027 general elections, though he did not disclose his next political move.
