US lawmaker to brief White House on protecting Christians in Nigeria

A United States Congressman, Rep. Riley Moore, has said he will soon brief the White House and offer policy options on how to protect Christians facing persecution in Nigeria.

Moore disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle, following comments by Catholic Bishop Robert Barron highlighting the killings of Christians in the country.

The lawmaker expressed appreciation to Bishop Barron for drawing international attention to the plight of Nigerian Christians, describing them as victims of sustained faith-based violence.

“Thank you, Bishop Barron, for shedding light on how our brothers and sisters in Christ are being persecuted for their faith in Nigeria,” Moore said.

He added: “You’re right. I will be briefing the White House on this issue very soon to present options on how the United States can help protect Christians in Nigeria.”

Moore further revealed that the House Appropriations Committee would soon submit a detailed report to President Donald Trump on the situation in Nigeria.

According to him, the report will contain facts, oversight findings and leadership recommendations, alongside the recently passed Fiscal Year 2026 National Security, Department of State and Related Programs (NSRP) bill, which he said promotes U.S. security, humanitarian values and religious freedom.

The US lawmaker’s comments come amid renewed international concern over persistent attacks on Christian communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the North and Middle Belt regions.
