Igboho Urges Oyo Monarchs to Prioritise Security Over Council Chairmanship Dispute

Yoruba nation activist, Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has called on the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, to focus on tackling insecurity in the South-West rather than contesting the leadership of the Oyo State Council of Obas.

Igboho’s statement comes amid a dispute over the rotational chairmanship of the Council of Obas. Recently, Governor Seyi Makinde appointed Oba Ladoja as chairman under a new rotational arrangement that allows the Olubadan, the Alaafin, and the Soun of Ogbomoso to hold the position in turn.

Reacting to the controversy, Igboho described the disagreement as “unimpressive” and urged the traditional rulers to unite in addressing the rising wave of banditry and violent crimes in the region.

He also called on other Yoruba leaders, including the Ooni of Ife, Oba Enitan Adeyeye Ogunwusi, and the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Oba Francis Olushola Alao, to help ease tensions surrounding the council’s leadership.

“Why should our royal fathers dissipate energy on positions when bandits, terrorists, and other criminal elements have taken over our forests in the South-West, considering the recent killings of guards in Old Oyo National Park and other parts of Oyo State?” Igboho said.

He stressed that traditional rulers should act as agents of unity, cohesion, and economic growth, adding that disputes over positions should not take precedence over the safety and welfare of their communities.

Igboho urged Yoruba monarchs to prioritise security, territorial integrity, and collective development over ceremonial disagreements.
