Impeachment Plot
A former Chairman of Obio-Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has charged members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to free themselves from alleged manipulation by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in the ongoing impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
Speaking on Saturday during an interview on Arise Television monitored in Port Harcourt, Ihunwo insisted that the lawmakers owe their loyalty to the people of Rivers State and not to any individual political interest.
He maintained that Governor Fubara was elected through the mandate of the electorate and had not committed any offence that would justify his removal from office.
“Members of the Rivers State House of Assembly must resist manipulation by Wike. Governor Sim Fubara was elected on the mandate of the Rivers people, not on Nyesom Wike’s mandate,” Ihunwo said.
He warned that any attempt to destabilise the state through politically motivated impeachment proceedings could threaten the fragile peace currently enjoyed in the region.
The former council boss appealed to President Bola Tinubu, as leader of the ruling party, to urgently intervene and prevent the crisis from escalating.
“This Assembly must remain independent to allow peace to prevail in the state. Governor Fubara has done nothing to warrant his removal. President Tinubu should step in as the leader of the party to protect democracy in Rivers State,” he added.
The impeachment process initiated by a faction of the Assembly has continued to generate tension in the state, with several stakeholders calling for dialogue and respect for constitutional order.
